We’d like to introduce you to Gwendy Cheek / =PR=┬áReston

I began running in middle school and absolutely hated it! Fast forward 20 years. One of my sisters had just completed her first half marathon and asked me if I wanted to join her for the next one. With minimal running experience at the time, of course, my answer was yes!

The training for that half was long and stressful. I was a stay at home mom to two children under the age of three but I figured running was something I could do with them. Walking out the door and going for a run with the jogger seemed easy enough. After months of training though, I was exhausted, and vowed never to run again. However, as I crossed the finish line of that very first race, everything changed. I sobbed. I couldn’t believe that my body had done this. I was hooked. I went home and looked for my next half.

One of the things that I now love most about running is that it’s my “me” time. It’s quiet, I’m alone, and I can push myself as much as I want to. And let’s not forget about the medals. I love getting a medal after a race. It makes the entire experience worth it.

My youngest son started kindergarten this year. While running the Army 10-miler in October, I thought a lot about what I wanted to be “when I grow up”. =PR= came to mind. I’ve purchased my running shoes from there and thought that I would really love to do something that involved running. I emailed =PR= that night… and the rest is history.
